Founded in 2022 in a small river town in eastern Minnesota, Water Sign Books was built on a simple idea: every story deserves a chance. We’re a small team, which means every manuscript gets real attention, not a form letter. Now based in New York City, we are here to help authors, whether they are new or established, feel heard by the publishing industry.

Water Sign Books is a small independent publisher dedicated to stories that feel like they were waiting to be told — thoughtful fiction, playful stories for young readers, and everything in between.

We work closely with each author from first draft to finished book, because we believe good editing is a conversation, not a checklist. Every title we publish is one we’d hand to a friend.
